Get Involved with Avoca Main Street

The Main Street Iowa Program works with a select group of communities committed to downtown economic development. Avoca Main Street, Inc. is proud to be one of more than 50 communities in the state who have been designated Main Street communities. By utilizing the four-point approach of Main Street America, communities are able to capitalize on the unique identity, assets, and character of their historic commercial districts.

Design

The Design Committee works to enhance the physical appearance of Downtown by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging appropriate new construction, utilizing design management systems, and long-term planning. As part of the Four Point Approach to Main Street revitalization, the Design Committee handles the following:

  • Encouraging historic standards in all possible downtown design activities: maintenance, rehab, new construction, signage, and public improvements.
  • Working with local design and construction professionals to ensure they understand the proper treatment of old buildings.
  • Partnering with city government to oversee local ordinances affecting downtown building activity.
  • Working with state and local preservation offices.
  • Showcasing underutilized downtown building inventory by offering window decorating for available spaces, abandoned signage cleanup efforts, and hosting of the annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour.
  • Creating, encouraging, and maintaining placemaking engagements such as downtown benches, plantings, banners and signage, the Avoca Public Library's Outdoor Musical Garden, and Collaborative Community Art Board.

The Design Committee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:15 p.m. Contact Avoca Main Street if you would like to join us!
