Avoca Main Street Fourth of July Celebrations Announced
The City of Avoca and Avoca Main Street, Inc. have announced plans for 2024’s Fourth of July Celebrations.
Celebrations will begin with a patriotic costume fun run/walk in front of the Courthouse Medallion at 203 N Elm Street at 9 a.m. Sign up for the run starting at 8:30 a.m. Raddberry’s Bakery is hosting a Car Show on South Elm Street starting at 9 a.m. and lasting until noon, with hot dogs and brisket available for attendees. Starting at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Courthouse, the kids pedal tractor pull competition will begin, sponsored by Titan Machinery. From 10:30-1:30, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will have soda floats and walking tacos available at the Avoca Veterans Community Center at 112 N Elm Street. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., enjoy the Midway on Main Street fundraiser for the Avoca Veterans Community Center renovation project, sponsored by the City of Avoca and local businesses and organizations. At 11 a.m. the popular food tent hosted by the United Church of Avoca will open at 304 N Elm Street. Please register your parade entries starting at noon at the East Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds at 307 W Lincoln St. Pauley Jones Funeral Home is sponsoring popsicles for parade attendees to enjoy starting at 1:30 p.m. near the Courthouse. The Parade starts at 2 p.m. and will go north from the Fairgrounds to Wool Street, where it will turn west towards Pine Street and then return south to the Fairgrounds. The City of Avoca and the Avoca Volunteer Fire & Rescue will have fireworks at CountryView Golf Course starting at dusk. The fireworks display is also viewable from Edgington Memorial Park.
This year’s Grand Marshall is Milt Hanson, former City Attorney for the City of Avoca and longtime resident. Hanson arrived in Avoca in April of 1962 and practiced law for over fifty years at the firm Hanson Sulhoff & Larson.
Besides law and his family, one of his passions is building dollhouses. He has built and furnished over thirty dollhouses, including one that is in the Newtown-Avoca Historical Society & Sweet Vale of Avoca Museum Collection, which depicts Abraham Lincoln’s original house in Springfield, Illinois.
His service to the law has been recognized by the Iowa Bar Association. Hanson celebrated his 91st birthday this year. He will be driven by Brent Hansen and accompanied by his daughter Rená Shaw.
